We call on OCT to reverse and refund the fee increase!

Send an email to the OCT Governing Council now.

At its December 8th Governing Council meeting, the Ontario College of Teachers passed its 2023 budget which included a 17.6% membership fee increase. This fee increase occurred without any discussion or debate from any of the 12 councilors, including the six members of the teaching profession (only one of whom is a classroom teacher).

This organization is funded entirely by membership fees; attempts to ensure that members are well informed and aware of the budgeting process are critical. The budget which includes the increase was positioned three weeks before its implementation. There was no real opportunity for input, discussion, debate or dissent – crucial aspects to a self-regulating organization. I join many others in the profession calling for improved transparency at the OCT.

I am sending this email to members of the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) Governing Council as a dismayed member of the profession. I am aware that the OCT recently passed its 2023 budget, which includes an exorbitant 17.6% membership fee increase. I am calling on the OCT to reverse and refund this fee increase to members of the profession.

This comes at a time when millions of Ontarians are dealing with the impacts of inflation and increased costs of living.

I stand in solidarity with the Ontario Teachers’ Federation and its four Affiliates—Association des enseignantes et des enseignants franco-ontariens, Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario, Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association and Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation—as they defend members of the profession against this exorbitant fee increase.
